St James’ Day and the Virgen Blanca Festivities
Vitoria-Gasteiz
Every 25 July, Vitoria-Gasteiz transforms. The streets are filled with blusas and neskas (men and women in traditional dress), parades and a festive atmosphere. The Garlic Fair, with its enormous strings of garlic that were once used to protect homes and crops, shows how the tradition is being kept alive and impresses all those who visit it.
A little later, on 4 August, the Lowering of Celedón from the San Miguel Tower marks the start of the Virgen Blanca Festivities. This figure, a symbol of the people of Álava, descends into a packed square, marking the start of several days of celebrations. Until 9 August, the city is buzzing with concerts, theatre, craft and food fairs, and activities for all ages.
But the true spirit of La Blanca should be experienced, above all, on the streets: in the atmosphere of the street groups, in the music, in the folk traditions and in a culture that is evident in every corner of the city.
