Discover Álava’s Romanesque architecture
Vitoria-Gasteiz
The Way of St. James reaches Vitoria-Gasteiz from the east, after crossing the Llanada Alavesa and passing through small rural villages such as Argandoña, Askartza and Arkaia. From Elorriaga, the route leads into the city and passes through the medieval quarter, inviting walkers to discover its historical heritage, notably the Renaissance palaces and the Cathedral of Saint Mary.
The Way then heads westwards through the municipality to the Basilica of San Prudencio de Armentia, one of the main landmarks of the local Romanesque architecture and a place of particular significance in the region’s pilgrimage tradition.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estíbaliz, situated very close to Vitoria-Gasteiz to the south-east, is another key site for understanding Álava’s Romanesque architecture.
